NIH policy (NOT-OD-25-132) requires that all submitted work be original and not substantially developed by generative AI (gAI). Publishers may also have specific guidelines regarding the use of gAI in scholarly works. Any gAI use must be transparent, limited, and carefully reviewed for accuracy. UAB encourages prescreening with Turnitin/iThenticate’s gAI detection tool and documenting the basis for any author-written text flagged above 20%, recognizing that false positives may occur. Users should also be aware of issues with false negatives (around 15%) and bias against non-native English writers.  Maintaining draft histories and other authenticity records helps demonstrate provenance and ensures compliance with sponsor expectations.
