An AmeriCorps VISTA Position with the UAB Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research is a year-long service and leadership program open to recent college graduates interested in strengthening UAB’s commitment and service to the Birmingham community. Fellows will develop projects designed to increase UAB student and faculty involvement in education, health, and economic opportunity initiatives in collaboration with K-12 schools and other community-based organizations.

Hello all! My name is Diamond Austin and I work in the Resource Recovery Center as a VISTA. I love my placement and enjoy the work environment here! I chose to become an Americorps VISTA because I truly enjoy serving others and this gives me the opportunity to experience working in the public health field.


Jarian Benning

Media Fellow, Service Learning Ambassadors, VRA's, Social Spotlight

Jarian Benning was born and for the most part raised in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, during the fall of 2018, from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. While attending UAB, she was a student leader for the office of Student Multicultural and Diversity Programs where she served on the boards of The Social Justice Advocacy Council, The Black Student Awareness Committee, and Global Citizenship 101. Jarian has always had a passion for serving her community and utilizing her talents to help others in a meaningful way; this passion is what lead Jarian to become a VISTA. After serving as a VISTA, Jarian plans to pursue her master's degree, travel, and continue her work within the local community.


Amber Pope

Media Fellow, Donaldson liaison

Amber Pope is from Pelham, Alabama, and graduated from the University of Alabama at BIrmingham in the fall of 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media and Film Production. She has previously attended Jefferson State community college. While at Jeff State, she was a member of the speech team where she won various regional and national awards. She also served as vice president of the team. During her time at UAB she made several films both in both narrative and documentary style. One of her films, “Blocked”, screened at the Sidewalk Film Festival in 2016. Her goal as a fellow is to create a video series that will draw more student and faculty interest in engaging with the surrounding communities in Birmingham.


Eli Ponder-Twardy

Eli is an alumnus of the University of South Florida, Jacksonville State University, and the University of Leeds (Leeds, UK) where he studied as a US-UK Fulbright Scholar. Eli’s background is primarily in the arts, but he has a passion for community-driven non-profit initiatives. He is very honored to serve his home state as a VISTA member at the Community Foodbank of Central Alabama.

As one of several Regional Arts Collaborative organizations across Alabama, the Greater Birmingham Arts Education Collaborative exist to serve as part of Alabama’s Artistic Literacy Consortium (ALC) – a collaborative structure that supports the Plan for Arts Education endorsed by the State Board of Education.

Assistant Healthy Food Access Coordinator

Assistant Healthy Food Access Coordinator

The Assistant Healthy Food Access Coordinator will have three areas of responsibility:

  1. Assisting with the expansion of a free summer lunch program for children at risk of food insecurity over the summer months when schools are closed.
  2. Assisting with the operation of a mobile grocery store called the Corner Market that travels to economically distressed neighborhoods that do not have access a full-service grocery store.
  3. Assist with additional hunger programs including mobile school pantries that delivery fresh produce and other healthy staples to school campuses.

BAMA Kids Inc. exists to improve the well-being-both physically and spiritually of youth in Wilcox County by combining organized recreational and educational activities, developing and promoting leadership involvement for youth and their parents, and by promoting life skills to prevent substance abuse and other harmful activities.

BAMA Kids Summer Associates

BAMA (Better Activities Make All-Around) Kids, Inc. is a community-based non-profit organization dedicated to the holistic development of youth and their families in Wilcox County. BAMA Kids, Inc. coordinates resources to provide a comprehensive range of activities that serve as alternatives to negative behavior. BAMA Kids, Inc. has been successful in coordinating existing resources, combining varied activities and developing others in order to establish a comprehensive program across the county. Through participation, youth gain educational, social, and communication skills, as well as, information and support to maintain sound physical, emotional and mental health. Caring staff and mentors serve as positive reinforcement and nurture the youth in this program. At the same time, parents of the youth acquire skills that serve to strengthen the family unit. BAMA Kids, Inc. focuses on the children and youth in the family, develops a relationship with them, which then facilitates a rapport with parents who would otherwise be difficult to reach. The 2019 Summer Enrichment Program will focus on academic readiness and retention of learning, mentoring, life skills, and cultural arts. BAMA Kids is also a registered summer feeding site. Outputs and outcomes will include: # of meals served, retention of reading, writing and mathematics skills, and character building sessions and near-peer mentoring to reduce youth substance use and abuse.

Blazer Kitchen is UAB's on-campus food pantry open to all UAB students and employees. The pantry provides fresh and non-perishable foods as well as toiletries and household supplies to those who are food insecure.

To engage the community in Dallas and Wilcox County Alabama to participate in public health screenings. To empower the community to take responsibility for their health outcomes. The VISTA will be instrumental in all aspects of research including, recruitment, retention, and visit coordination. Vista will help build capacity related to public health and create a sustainable health improvement plan that can be leveraged to alleviate poverty.

The Assistant Volunteer Coordinator will assist with the coordination of the Community Food Bank’s Volunteer Program and act as liaison with key partners.

The overall goal of this project is to enhance awareness of the modes of HIV transmission and to increase the HIV prevention efforts for individuals who are receiving services in Drug and Substance Treatment Facilities and linkage to care for individuals with newly diagnosed HIV infection.

Fish Guide Coordinator

Fish Guide Coordinator

The VISTA will assess the current state of fish consumption advisories in surrounding states. They will support Coosa Riverkeeper in creating an updated study on the fishing habits, practices, and understanding of the advisories themselves in the Coosa River Basin. They will also set up the outreach systems and build partnerships with community organizations in order to spread the word about the Fish Guide program and the advisories themselves. In addition to developing targeted marketing materials and promote the program at public events.

Serve with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research, to support and connect community organizations in the Birmingham area that are working to promote and maintain food security.

The goal of the Magic City Harvest (MCH) is to address food insecurity and food waste in Birmingham Alabama. The VISTA's service will assist in educating the community on hunger issues, create and/or support collaborative partnerships that focus on these issues.

The goal of this project is to implement the Water, Environment and Rural Kids(WERK) project, a middle-school-based clean water and environment curriculum, with Perry County middle school science teacher(s) and students to raise youth awareness and knowledge of clean water, its importance to their community, and their role in supporting a healthy environment and personal achievement.

Samford Outreach and Engagement Fellow - Perry County

The goal of the project is to increase the organizational capacity of partnering organizations in Perry County that serve low-income communities and families. The VISTA will develop policies, procedures and programming that result in improved university-community project operations and effectiveness. By building long-term sustainability and enhancing the positive impact of Samford University’s community partnerships, this VISTA member will support McWhorter’s outreach efforts in Perry County as well as the growing number of Mann Center initiatives that engage university students and employees.

The Urban Policy Surveillance and Built Environment fellow will work with UAB's School of Public Health to monitor, document, and disseminate local policy actions that can impact population health and improve health equity in Birmingham and Jefferson County, AL.

The liaison will support health education, research, and community development in partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham and West Central Alabama Community Health Improvement League (WCACHIL). Their efforts will build the capacity of WCAHIL and empower the community to alleviate pressing health concerns.
