Awards
The School of Health Professions (SHP) Student Awards are managed by the SHP Student Scholarships and Awards Committee with endorsement from the Program Directors and/or Faculty. Award recipients are recognized in the spring semester each year.

Dean’s Leadership and Service Award
This award is presented to up to three outstanding students for leadership and service to the school, University, and the community. More than one student may be nominated from each program. The criteria include: GPA and other scholastic awards and achievements, collegiate and program-related public service activities while enrolled in SHP, other collegiate activities prior to enrolling in SHP, and community activities.

Cecile Clardy Satterfield Award for Humanism in Health Care
This award recognizes an outstanding student for humanitarianism, professionalism, and commitment to health care. More than one student may be nominated from each program.

Alfred W. Sangster Award for Outstanding International Student
This award is presented to an outstanding international student in recognition of their academic and non-academic accomplishments. More than one student may be nominated from each program.

Charles Brooks Award for Creativity
This award is presented to an outstanding student in recognition of their creative accomplishments (written publications, artistic contributions, etc.) that complement the student’s academic activities in both the School and UAB. More than one student may be nominated from each program.
Scholarships
The School of Health Professions offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to school-wide scholarships, many departments and programs offer their own scholarships. Visit the department website or ask your advisor if you are interested in departmental scholarship opportunities.
Current School of Health Professions students will receive an email each semester detailing the available scholarships and application process. Students will submit applications online through a provided link. Applications are typically open for one month.

SHP School-Wide Scholarship Opportunities
Blazer Forever Scholarship
The Blazer Forever Scholarship is awarded each year during Homecoming Week. Recipients are selected based on their response to an essay prompt aligning with the Homecoming theme.

Carol E. Medders Endowed Scholarship in Health Professions
The Carol E. Medders Endowed Scholarship in Health Professions was established by Carol Medders, former Director of Admissions for the School of Health Professions Student Services. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a full-time, degree-granting program in the School of Health Professions and should demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. The award recipient should be enrolled in a program that has a competitive application process and academic course load that prohibits them from holding full-time employment. This scholarship is awarded for the Spring Semester.

Dr. Edward D. and Sandra Dunning Huechtker Endowed Memorial Award
The Dr. Edward D. and Sandra Dunning Huechtker Endowed Memorial Award provides assistance to deserving students in need of financial support to continue in the pursuit of their goal of a career in the health professions. This award is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in one of the School of Health Professions majors. Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. This scholarship is awarded in the Spring Semester.

Ethel M. and Jesse D. Smith Endowed Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship
The Ethel M. and Jesse D. Smith Endowed Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship is an endowment that provides scholarships for both the School of Health Professions and School of Nursing. Applicants must be enrolled in a School of Health Professions undergraduate program and be a resident of the state of Alabama. Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. This scholarship is awarded in the Fall.

Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Scholarship
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation provides funding for scholarships focused on the foundation’s founding mission—to provide financial assistance to women who express financial need in nine southeastern states. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarships are awarded to women who, in addition to financial need, have an interest in pursuing studies in nursing or other health-related professions. Both undergraduate and graduate students within the Schools of Nursing and Health Professions are eligible. This scholarship is awarded each semester.

Carleton G. Rivers Award in the School of Health Professions
The Carleton G. Rivers Award in the School of Health Professions is given to School of Health Professions students each year. Students must be currently enrolled in or have previously enrolled in NTR 222 Nutrition and Health to be eligible. All applicants must have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be pursuing a degree in the School of Health Professions. Applicants must have a 3.0+ GPA in UAB coursework. This scholarship is awarded each semester.

School of Health Professions Junior Advisory Board Endowed Scholarship
The School of Health Professions Junior Advisory Board Endowed Scholarship was established to provide financial awards assisting students with the completion of professional licensure and certification exams necessary to practice in their fields and/or the costs associated with professional development and job preparation. This scholarship is awarded in the Spring semester.
