    After teaching in the Department of Health Services for over 10 years, Dr. Burke and his wife have relocated to Florida to provide care to their parents. Darrell taught classes across the department and always added his quick wit and knowledge of many topics to the classroom discussion. We will miss Darrell’s wicked humor – maybe he’ll write a book about his Facebook MarketPlace experiences?

    Welcome Monica Aswani, PhD, who joined our team January 1, 2019, as an assistant professor. She recently earned her PhD in Health Care Organization and Policy from the UAB School of Public Health. As a doctoral candidate she was one of only two national recipients of the Phi Kappa Phi Dissertation Fellowship.

  • Michelle Brown, PhD

    Brown shared that the OIPS (simulation) team was designated as a “Sepsis Star” in the recent Sepsis newsletter for all they have done to improve the care UAB Health System delivery to patients with sepsis. Brown shared that simulation and the HQS programs are highlighted in the UAB Medicine Quality and Patient Safety Annual Report as a contributor to patient safety.     Brown was recently interviewed (and now it is in print) on the how we can meet the future needs of the laboratory profession. The publication is “ASCP Board of Certification: A Guiding Light in the Laboratory Profession for 90 years.”

    Had a manuscript accepted for publication: “Exploring Hidden Curricula in an Interprofessional Intensive Care Unit Simulation” in the journal Clinical Simulation in Nursing. It is co-written with Nancy Wingo and Penni Watts from the UAB School of Nursing.

    Feldman was lead author along with Scott Burkhalter, MD, and Leslie Hayes, MD, on a paper for JMIR Medical Informatics titled “Health Information Technology in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety: Prevention, Identification, And Action”.

    Hearld was elected as Chair-Elect of the UAB Faculty Senate.

    Hernandez has been selected to serve as Co-Chair of the Global Accreditation Standards Committee of CAHME.

    Houser and Vega were recognized for their contributions to making the UAB Benevolent Fund an important priority. Way to go and thank you both for that hard work!

  • Nataliya Ivankova, PhD

    A new graduate Mixed Methods and Qualitative Research Certificate program led by Nataliya has been approved (moving through all the channels now).

    Ivankova also had a grant funded! “Adapting Multiple Behavior Interventions That Effectively Improve (AMPLIFI) Cancer Survivor Health” was funded through NCI/NIH/DHHS. This is a 5-year project. Nataliya will co-lead the Adaptation, Dissemination, and Implementation (ADI) Shared Resource Core with Laura Rogers, MD. Congratulations!

    Lemak hosted a live webinar for the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives called “#TIMESUP in Health Care?” and 65 people attended. Here’s a link - https://youtu.be/cJ2Xl1EnTdU Lemak was elected to the Board of the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame.

    Lemak had a new article in the journal Healthcare titled "Practice Strategies to Improve Primary Care for Chronic Disease Patients Under a Pay-for-Value Program".

  • Tapan Mehta, PhD

    Mehta had an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) titled "How Much Variation in Outcomes Is Too Much in a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery?"

    Tapan and Mohan were co-authors on a recently accepted manuscript for publication: “Rationale and Design of the Tele-Exercise and Multiple Sclerosis (TEAMS) Study: A Comparative Effectiveness Trial Between a Clinic- and Home-Based Telerehabilitation Intervention for Adults with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Living in the Deep South” in the Journal Contemporary Clinical Trials. Wonderful work and congratulations to both Tapan and Mohan (this paper was part of a student capstone project).

  • Mehta and Mohanraj Thirumalai, PhD

    Congratulations to Tapan and Mohan and the Lakeshore Team! Jim Rimmer learned that the remarkable “DRRP” team’s application to the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) has been selected for funding: Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) Program: Exercise Interventions for People with Disabilities. Well done!!!

    Additionally, Mehta had a PhD student, Yumi Kim receive a 2018 Ireland Travel Scholarship from UAB.

  • Soumya Niranjan, PhD

    Niranjan joined the Department of Health Services Administration as an Assistant Professor in September.

    Niranjan has been selected to participate as a scholar in the 2018-19 Health Disparities Research Education Award Certificate Program (HDREP). Way to go, Soumya!

    Soumya won the William C. Bailey Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention and Control Research at the UAB Cancer Center Research Retreat:

    “Trust but verify: Patterns of obtaining health information and the role of physician trust in decision making amongst patients with metastatic breast cancer”

    O’Connor has been elected to the Board of Directors of EURAM for a three-year term.

    Steve and PhD student Katherine Meese (current PhD student) published a paper: “Provider Sponsored Insurance: A Scoping Review.” Journal of Accounting and Finance, Vol. 18, No. 2, 2018, 175-190.

  • Haiyan Qu, PhD (PhD 2007)

    Qu just discovered that one of her older articles was “commended” by Modern Medicine Network. The article, titled "A Lupus Medication Decision Aid Made Simple" was published in December 2016.

    Dr. Qu had a paper accepted: “Patient-centered communication: dissecting provider communication” in the International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance.

  • Jessica Williams, PhD

    Williams had a paper titled "Health System Affiliation and 30-Day Readmission After Heart Attack in Black Men" accepted to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

    Williams has been appointed as a Faculty Senate Representative on the Undergraduate Research Advisory Committee.
