Mamie Coats, PhDMamie Coats, PhDThe University of Alabama at Birmingham is thrilled to welcome members of the Southeastern Branch of the American Society for Microbiology (SEB-ASM) for their annual meeting. Hosted by UAB’s School of Health Professions, SEB-ASM’s annual meeting will be held on campus from October 23-25 with the theme, “Regional Accomplishment, Global Impact: Advancing Microbiology Together.”

Mamie Coats, Ph.D., currently serves as Program Co-Director for SHP’s Biomedical and Health Sciences program. While fulfilling her role in SHP, she also serves as SEB-ASM President, “Whether it’s in the classroom, in the lab, or doing research with colleagues across the world, UAB continues to lead the region in Microbiology,” Coats said, “We are so proud to welcome SEB-ASM members to UAB and show every attendee how special being a Blazer is.”

The conference will include keynote speakers, faculty presentations, break out sessions, and more. Coats is hopeful that the conference will allow professionals from across the southeast to connect and share knowledge, potentially opening the door for future collaborations.

Monika Oli, PhDMonika Oli, PhDKeynote speakers include Taru S. Dutt, Ph.D., assistant professor in UAB’s Department of Pathology, Division of Laboratory Medicine, and Tera Webb, Ph.D., assistant professor in UAB’s Medical Laboratory Science program.

The conference is also proud to welcome Monika Oli, Ph.D., who earned her Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the UAB in 2001. She will serve as ASM’s Distinguished Lecturer on October 24. Currently, Oli is a senior lecturer and undergraduate coordinator in the Department of Microbiology and Cell Science at the University of Florida. Oli spent nearly 10 years in the biotechnology industry, co-inventing 5 patents throughout her tenure. The title of her lecture is, Southern Roots. Global Impact.

While early registration closes October 9, on site registration is available October 23-24, Blazers from all corners of campus are welcome to attend this year’s annual meeting, “The Microbial sciences are behind so many discoveries that translate science to results and our scientists are known for connecting, collaborating and leading - I encourage all scientists and students to join us and find opportunities that can make an impact.”
