Michelle Brown receiving 2014 SHP Excellence in Teaching AwardMichelle Brown receiving 2014 SHP Excellence in Teaching AwardMichelle Brown, MS, MLS(ASCP)SBB, an assistant professor in the School of Health ProfessionsClinical and Laboratory Science program, has been selected to receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The annual honor recognizes those who demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in teaching. The announcement of the 11 winners across UAB had this to say about Brown:

“Brown regularly teaches across disciplines and schools, and she challenges students to sharpen their problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills through rigorous laboratory and simulation situations.”

Brown, who won the 2014 SHP Excellence in Teaching Award, teaches curriculum in the Department of Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences including analysis of body fluids, immunohematology and clinical practice. She also teaches the certification review.

But beyond the classroom lessons, Brown has taught them invaluable life lessons according to the UAB News article:

“Equally important, she teaches them not to be intimidated by the authority or experience of others — but to be willing to step in and state their case in an assertive, yet humble and caring manner, for the patient’s sake.”

In 2014, Brown was named to the inaugural American Society for Clinical Pathology’s “40 Under 40” and was the 2014 ASCP Southeast Region Member of the Year.
