b799633c f0c8 4075 8595 c7ab4bcc5eadTraining for COVID-19 donning and doffing procedures can now be done using screen-based simulation. eTrain, a company known for creating artificial intelligence-enabled simulation scenarios, has created a free simulation around the CDC recommended donning and doffing processes for COVID-19. Those participating in this 10-minute module have the opportunity to watch videos on the processes before directing the simulated provider through the appropriate steps. All actions are immediately addressed and feedback given on the accuracy of decisions. The module concludes with a quiz testing comprehension.

While the eTrain module is an excellent resource, several steps in the donning and doffing processes within the eTrain module differ from the UAB process. These differences are as follows:

  • Jewelry: UAB’s process recommends removal of all jewelry before donning PPE.
  • Impermeable gown: ensure you fasten the gown both behind your neck and back to ensure your clothing stays protected from droplet particles.
  • Face Shield: UAB recommends a separate face shield or goggles be worn, as opposed to a surgical mask with shield, to protect both the eyes and mask of the healthcare professional.
  • Hand Hygiene: UAB recommends hand hygiene before beginning the doffing process and between each step to minimize risk of contamination.
