Students enrolled in the MPH, MSPH (ENH IHY concentration only), and DrPH programs must consent to and complete a criminal background check prior to starting their internship or practicum. Students will be restricted from enrolling in the courses associated with the internship/practicum until the background check is completed; failure to complete the internship/practicum in a timely manner will be considered “failure to progress” and may result in dismissal from the program.

The UAB School of Public Health is working with the third-party vendor,, to complete criminal background checks for students in the programs listed above. The cost of the background check is $45.75, which is payable by the student to CastleBranch directly.

Frequently asked questions about background check waivers as of July 25, 2022.

Are Medical Students exempt from the background check?

No, MPH students are required to complete an internship.

If an international student completes his/her degree outside the US (including the completion of the internship) are they exempt from the background check?

Yes, international students completing their program outside the US are exempt from the background check requirement.

UAB employees (and employees in other organizations) are required to complete a Background Check for employment. Can SOPH receive some type of background check validation from Human Resource departments so that the background check requirement can be waived?

No, we cannot get verification of completion from a HR department.

  • HR departments will be unable to release the background check report/results to a department/school.
  • The background check that is administered by other institutions may not cover the same parameters as CastleBranch (PUH Background Check).

If a student completes their internship at their place of employment, can they be waived from completing the SOPH background check?

Yes, the background check can be waived upon request.

  • The student must request a waiver in writing with a validation from the organization/internship site stating that the employee/student has completed an employee background check which is sufficient for their internship.
  • Validation can be sent to Cheryl Johnson at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If a student is a full-time employee at UAB and completes their internship at UAB, are they required to complete the SOPH background check?

No. If a student works at UAB as a full-time or part-time employee (not a student employee) and completes their internship at UAB, they will not be required to complete the CastleBranch background check.

  • The student’s employment status will need to be verified.
  • Validation can be sent to Cheryl Johnson at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Are students who complete their internship remotely exempt from the background check?

Yes. Students who will complete their internship remotely are waived from the SOPH background check requirement. The internship coordinator must verify that the internship will be completely remote.

Are students in the coordinated programs required to complete a background check If they have already completed one for another program (i.e., Social Work, or Physical Therapy)?

No. If a student in a coordinated degree program has completed a background check for their practicum or internship for that program, they are not required to complete the SOPH background check.

They will need to provide proof of completion of the background check.

If the student does not pass the background check, what happens?

It was decided that failure to pass the background check will not keep a student from receiving admissions or completing an internship and/or degree.

  • If asked by the organization (internship site), the student would need to make the background check report available. Only the student can disclose an offense listed on the report to the organization.
  • If the student cannot clear up the offense, it will limit the number of internships available to the student. Nevertheless, it will be up to the organization to determine if they will select the student for that intern.
