On Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, UAB Veteran Services hosted its Coins and Cords Ceremony. This end of the semester celebration commemorates UAB student veterans’ academic achievements and their service in our nation's armed forces.

All honorees were presented with graduation cords while those with a grade point average of 3.4 and above were awarded challenge coins. Demetrius Pearson began with opening remarks before Nathaniel Rutledge, retired Chief of Police for the city of Bessemer, sang the National Anthem. UAB Veteran Services Director Walter C. Stewart III and Vice President of Student Health and Wellbeing Rebecca Kennedy spoke and issued each student their graduation cords.

“The Veteran Services office here is awesome at what they do,” said Jayla Brown, a veteran who will graduate on Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, with a Master of Science in Nursing. Brown served as a supply chain specialist in the United States Marine Corps from 2017 through 2022 in Okinawa, Japan. Of her time as a UAB Blazer, Brown said, “I love it here, it’s a great nursing school. I would recommend it to anyone.”
