A national grant is helping Student Affairs expand the impact of this year’s Into the Streets as the country commemorates the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11th attacks.
Student Mentorship & Leadership received a 9/11 Day Campus Grant to support Into the Streets and create additional opportunities for Blazers to turn remembrance into action on September 19, during the day of service when students come together to better communities in Birmingham. The funding will support the assembly of more than 700 care packages for veterans, active service members and first responders, along with materials for a 9/11 Day remembrance ceremony in partnership with UAB Veteran Services. The care packages will be assembled in the National Alumni Society House, 1301 10th Ave. South.
The grant also represents an opportunity to deepen the educational purpose of Into the Streets. Students will not only participate in hands-on service but also reflect on the connection between remembrance, civic responsibility, and community engagement.
“The experience could begin with a student simply looking to fulfill service hours. But through the remembrance ceremony and service supporting veterans, active service members and first responders, that experience can become something more meaningful — an opportunity to better understand community needs, build relationships and recognize their own capacity to create positive change,” said Abby Huguley, assistant director of Student Success.
This service event also helps address barriers that can prevent students from participating in community service, including transportation, time constraints, and limited access to volunteer opportunities. By bringing service opportunities to campus and coordinating projects with community partners, Into the Streets creates an accessible way for students to make a difference in Birmingham.
Ultimately, the goal extends beyond one day of service. Organizers hope students leave Into the Streets with a deeper understanding of civic engagement and a lasting commitment to giving back, leading with purpose and contributing positively to their communities.
