The University of Alabama at Birmingham transformed its Campus Green into an iceless skating rink on Friday night, January 30, for Blazers on Ice, a Friday Night Live event designed to promote student well-being, connection, and stress relief.
Hosted by UAB Student Affairs, the event invited all UAB students to enjoy free iceless skating, hot chocolate, and beignets in a relaxed, welcoming environment. Powered by Happi Pappi Food Truck and Neon Entertainment, Blazers on Ice provided a high-impact, accessible experience that encouraged students to take a break from academic demands and connect with peers.
FNL: Blazers on Ice aligns with UAB’s Success Initiative by creating supportive environments and meaningful engagement opportunities that help students thrive. By offering intentional programming that fosters community and belonging, Student Affairs continues to support students’ holistic success.
“I have never ice skated, and I was really excited to try something new because I just need to get out of my comfort zone, you know,” said Yaretzy Colin Miranda, sophomore, marketing major from Alabaster (Ala.). “It’s January, it's the only time I'll have free before finals, midterms, and application season. So I’m going to try it.”
“I thought the event was really cool, and I liked the music and the environment. It’s really nice,” said Caden Mathews, a freshman engineering major from Huntsville (Ala.).
“This is awesome. I love this so much,” said Kaylee Southern, a freshman majoring in biomedical sciences from Huntsville (Ala.).
The event also reflects UAB’s commitment as a Health Promoting University (HPU). This international designation recognizes institutions that integrate health, well-being, and sustainability into their campus culture. Opportunities for social connection and stress reduction, such as Friday Night Live events, play a key role in supporting students’ mental, emotional, and social health. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) became the first Health Promoting University in the United States in 2020.
“Creating spaces where students feel supported, connected, and valued is central to our mission,” said Mi’Kasa Mitchell, assistant director of Student Activities in the Office of Student Engagement. “Events like Blazers on Ice help students recharge, build relationships, and feel a stronger sense of belonging at UAB.”
Blazers on Ice is part of the ongoing Student Affairs' Friday Night Live series, which offers free weekend programming for students during the academic year. The series is designed to provide engaging experiences that support well-being and strengthen connection to the campus community.
