Supporting Students

by Dylan Fisher (Intern, Student Affairs Marketing and Communications)

“I followed my heart to Birmingham for college, and it's been my home ever since,” says Skyler Yasenchack, one of UAB’s Counselors in Residence.

Skyler received her M.A. in clinical mental health counseling from the University of Montevallo with a goal to offer a judgement-free haven for anyone, no matter what. In her position, she aims to, “Hold onto hope for those who need it most.” When Skyler isn’t on campus she is with Beau, her golden retriever and trusty sidekick, exploring everything Birmingham has to offer.

With the stress of midterms in full effect right now, Skyler is here to help. “Life can be a wild ride, especially during your college years. If you're looking for someone to talk to, whether it's about the challenges or the triumphs, I'm here.” All sessions are completely confidential and any notes taken are protected.

Blazers Let’s Talk is a collaborative effort between Student Counseling Services (SCS) and Student Housing and Residence Life (SHRL) to give all Blazers who live on-campus access to mental health services. All meetings take place in Camp Hall room 105, are confidential and are 15-20 minutes long. UAB’s Counselor in Residence staff offer walk-in services, single sessions, individual counseling, and consultations. Walk-in hours are available to all on campus residents Monday through Friday from 4 to 5 p.m.

We asked Skyler 5 questions to help you get to know her better.

  • What book has influence you the most?
Books hold power, right? A few gems that shaped my perspective: "On Becoming a Person" by Carl Rogers for life insights, "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl for resilience, and "Educated" by Tara Westover for conquering challenges.
  • What celebrity would you like to have dinner with?
If we're talking food and fun, I'd pick Gordon Ramsay any day. A dinner with him? A feast for sure!
  • What’s something on your bucket list?
Travel bug bit me hard—I want to explore all 50 states! From coast to coast, each one's got its own charm.
  • What is your hype-get-ready-in-the-morning song?
To get my mornings rolling, it’s got to be anything by AJR. But if I had to pick, "The World's Smallest Violin," hits just the right note.
  • Where’s your favorite spot to grab a snack on campus?
Starbucks is my go-to – because coffee definitely counts as a snack, right?
