Working out may sound unappealing for most, especially for those of us who can shamefully admit it’s been a while since we’ve seen a gym. Running a marathon might not be in the books for you anytime soon, but there are other ways to drop that freshman (or sophomore, junior or senior) 15 and have fun doing it. 

For those of us who still want to get the most of our summers without having to take time out of our day to work out, Birmingham has plenty of opportunities for group workout sessions with added twists that can make any session into a fun night out. For those who are more concerned about their budgets, staying active can be easy on you and your budget-- if you can stand the heat.

Railroad Park has been a part of the Birmingham family since 2010, adding 19 acres of greenery to the growing city around it. While it is a perfect spot to walk your dog, take a jog or even have a picnic, there are plenty of events held regularly to spice up your workout routine while enjoying the view of the Magic City.

Everyday of the week, the park offers a different scheduled workout class free of charge. If you want to overcome your case of “the Monday’s,” Jazzercise is held at 6 p.m., so be ready to dance it out. Tuesday’s “Bootcamp” is a high intensity workout session that will build endurance as well as sculpting those muscles you may have forgotten you had. Wednesday is Zumba, a Latin inspired aerobics class that will have you burning calories without you even noticing — you’ll be too busy trying to keep up with the beat. Thursday has a yoga class that focuses on strengthening and flexibility, while putting your mind at ease as you approach the end of the work week. “Happy Feet Friday” is a 60-minute walk/run course designed to train your inner runner.

The Rotary Trail is one of Birmingham’s newest additions, having been open only since April of this year. You can’t miss it with its 46 foot-tall “Rotary Trail in the Magic City” sign towering over 1st Ave. S., where the trail begins. While it only extends about a half mile, this trail is perfect for a scenic bike ride, jog or walk. Bring your friends and indulge in some conversation while you enjoy the scenery. The western end of the trail opens up to Railroad Park, while the eastern end opens up to Jones Valley Trail.

For those interested in getting off the ground and onto a bike, be sure to stop by Redemptive Cycles on 2nd Ave. N. every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to join Trample, a free group bike ride. The route varies but it usually stretching for about 10 miles. The ride is for everyone, set at a relatively slow pace, and the paths are relatively easy for beginners. The store is open before the ride if you haven’t purchased a bike yet.

Don’t want to miss drinks with your friends or coworkers after work but still want to get fit? No worries! Good People Brewery hosts Happy Hour Yoga every Tuesday for only $10, which includes one beer of your choice while enjoying a yoga class taught by Ally Edwards. Don’t forget to bring your own mat.
