"The Negatives of Biology" by student Derek Moates."The Negatives of Biology" by student Derek Moates.For admission in good standing to the MS and PhD programs, applicants must meet the following requirements (in addition to the Graduate School's standards):

  • an undergraduate degree in a biological science;
  • A-B-level scholarship in all biology courses;
  • two semesters of organic chemistry, two semesters of physics, and mathematics through calculus;
  • minimum of 154 on verbal and quantitative scores on the GRE General Test;
  • a personal statement of career goals; and
  • for international students, a TOEFL of 100 or IELTS of 7 is generally required.

Three letters of evaluation from individuals who have a thorough knowledge of the applicant's academic abilities and potential are also required. Students cannot be admitted with probationary status.

Since the faculty represent a diverse array of research interests, it is strongly recommended that a student contact a potential faculty mentor to discuss common interests prior to applying.

Application Deadlines

Students may enter at the beginning of any semester, with advanced deadlines of December 5 for CAS Graduate Research Fellowships (for exceptional students). Deadlines for students not applying for research fellowships are:
  • before March 1 for regular summer and fall applicants
  • before October 15 for spring applicants

Applications can be submitted on the UAB Graduate School website. Please note that applicants can apply for the 5th Year Masters of Science program (Fasttrack), the Master of Science program, or the PhD program. Applicants are considered automatically for stipends and fellowships when they apply before the deadlines.
