 UAB Graduate Student Research Days - 2012
Chemistry Graduate Students, Thao Nguyen and Katherine L. Hayden were first place winners at the UAB Graduate Student Research Days in their respective divisions! Ms. Nguyen won in her division of Physical Science and Engineering for her talk entitled Design, synthesis and evaluation of selective inhibitors TcDHFR as potential therapeutic agents for Chagas’ disease.Ms. Nguyen is mentored by Dr. Sadanandan Velu. Ms. Hayden won in her division of Biomedical and Life Sciences for her talk entitled Structural and thermodynamic analysis of a highly stable DNA hairpin. Ms Hayden is mentored by Dr. David Graves.

2011-2012 Ireland Scholarship winner and chemistry graduate student, Ms. Jiabei Lin presented her award-winning talk entitled: ClpB Self-Assembly at the meeting as well. Ms. Lin is mentored by Dr. Aaron Lucius.

Undergraduate Scholarship Recipient |
 Anthony Todd, Chemistry Major is one of only two UAB Juniors chosen to receive the UNCF/Merck Science Initiative scholarship. This award is a $25,000 scholarship and a summer internship at a Merck facility with a stipend of $6,000. Read more>>

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange |
First-year Chemistry major, Catherine Black, was recently accepted as one of 75 students nationwide into the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals.

In the spirit of interdisciplinary research, Biology major, Stephanie Arana, has received an Outstanding Research Presentation Award at the 32nd Undergraduate Research Conference in Memphis, TN for her topic "Immunomodulatory Multilayer Coatings of Pancreatic Islets Based On Hydrogen-Bonded Polyphenol" Ms. Arana’s research mentor is Dr. Eugenia Kharlampieva. |
