    Are you passionate about STEM, language arts, or social sciences and love to help others learn? The BS in Secondary Education and our STEM Education minor programs can help you combine those traits with the knowledge and experience needed to become a middle school or high school teacher. The Secondary Education program offers multiple content area concentrations that helps prepare graduates to teach grades 6–12 in the state of Alabama.

    The curriculum for all secondary education concentrations and offerings may differ based on the specific content area (e.g., English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, etc.) of interest. However, all secondary education majors will take courses that include competencies in the following areas: pedagogy, methods, foundations of education, classroom management, measurement and evaluation in education, and a semester-long internship to name a few.

    The School of Education and Human Sciences offers a BS in Secondary Education with two concentrations and a STEM education minor to prepare students to succeed in a specific content area. Learn about those concentrations below.

      Upon completing our BS in Secondary Education, students can apply for their Class B teaching certification with the Alabama State Department of Education.

      English Language Arts Concentration

      With the English Language Arts concentration, you can use your passion for reading, writing, and teaching to pursue a career in Secondary Education. English Language Arts is a broad teaching field that encompasses composition, theatre, mass communications, public speaking, a survey of the literature, and upper-level teaching field courses.

      General Social Science Concentration

      Intellectually curious and career-minded students have a variety of options through the General Social Sciences concentration. Social scientists study all aspects of society, from historical events and human achievements to the geographic landscape and government formation. This concentration offers a curriculum across many departments.

      UAB is one of the few universities that see the value in ensuring STEM educators are masters of their content area. We offer an 21-credit hour STEM education minor add-on for STEM majors to earn their teaching certification. The UABTeach program is working to prepare the next generation of STEM educators in Alabama.
