Admission Requirements

Admission to the Master of Engineering with a concentration in Design & Commercialization requires an undergraduate degree in Engineering or a STEM-related field. You must have a existing knowledge base of Engineering concepts to successully complete courework, the Innovation Design Project, and the internship. Application deadline is August 1; however applicants are encouraged to apply early to be considred for scholarships.

  • Bachelor of science degree in any engineering discipline or bachelor's degree in STEM-related field (physics, biology, chemistry, etc.)
  • Sufficient academic background to handle a graduate-level engineering courses as well as the Innovation Design Project
  • Official GRE scores | 150 minimum score (GRE requirement is waived for UAB graduates)
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation
  • Essay (academic interests, career goals, and relevant background experience)
  • Resume / CV
  • TOEFL/IELTS/PTEA test scores (international applicants only)
 

How to Apply

Applying for admission involves completing an online application to the UAB Graduate School and submitting official transcripts and test scores.

Complete Online Application

  • Complete the online graduate application through the UAB Graduate School online admission system.
  • Submit contact information for individuals who will write letters of recommendation.
    • Notification emails will be automatically sent to the identified recommenders.
  • Submit your resume / CV as an attachment with your online application.
  • Submit essay (a brief summary of your academic interests, career goals, and relevant background experience).
  • Submit non-refundable application fee payment.
    • $50 for domestic applicants and $60 for international applicants.

Submit Transcripts and Test Scores

  • Request one official transcript to be mailed by each post-secondary issuing institution to the UAB
    • Transcripts are considered unofficial unless they are issued in one of the following ways:
      • Electronic transcripts issued directly to the Graduate School by the school’s Registrar’s Office. Transcripts forwarded from a student’s email account will not be considered official.
      • Paper transcripts bearing a university seal sent directly to the Graduate School from the issuing school’s Registrar’s Office.
      • Paper transcripts submitted by the student in a sealed envelope bearing a university signature or stamp across the seal.

  • Submit official GRE test score. Institution code: 1856.
    • Test scores that are more than five years old are not accepted unless the program to which you are applying requests a recency waiver on your behalf. Applicants should contact the testing agency to have official scores sent to the UAB Graduate School.
  • Submit TOEFL/IELTS/PTEA test scores (international students only). Institution code: 1856.
  • Scholarships

    The UAB School of Engineering offers scholarship opportunities for qualified applicants. The UAB National Alumni Society also offers graduate-levels scholarships.

    Presidential Innovation Scholarships

    UAB offers eight $3,000 Presidential Innovation Scholarships to qualified applicants enrolling in the Master in Engineering Design & Commercialization each fall semester. Students must apply and be accepted into the program to be considered for a scholarship.

    UAB National Alumni Society Scholarships

    The UAB National Alumni Society partners with schools and colleges in raising over one million dollars from alumni to provide student scholarships.
