Mock Trial Team Continues Winning Ways

UAB's nationally ranked Mock Trial Team continued its winning ways 17-19 November by placing 3rd at the Rhodes College Invitational Tournament, sponsored by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA). This recognition came barely a week after the team finished 3rd overall in the 72 team tournament held at Middle Tennessee State University.

Among a field of 24 "by-invitation-only teams" that included 16 National Tournament Champion programs (including UAB's), the University fielded a composite team from its Green and Gold squads who had less than a week to prepare for the invitational.

Team member Jade Delisle earned a long awaited Best Witness award in a field of the best competitors in the nation. In all, an amazing accomplishment and testament to the entire Team effort!

This competition marks the end of the pre-season and UAB's Mock Trial Team will now channel all of its energies and efforts to prepare for Regional Competition February 9-11, 2007 at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.

UAB Mock Trial Team Earns Honors at AMTA Invitational
UAB began its 11th season of Mock Trial competition by representing the University with great distinction at the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Invitational Competition on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University, November 10-11, 2006. The team placed 3rd in a field of 72 teams that represented 40 colleges and universities from around the nation.

The Green squad of UAB's Mock Trial Team made history by earning a record 7 wins against only 1 loss, while the Gold squad compiled a record of 5 wins and 3 losses (tying the record for best performance of any UAB team in this tournament to date).

In addition to compiling the best overall record of any UAB team at the MTSU Invitational, we are also excited about the award of "Best Attorney" trophy to a team captain (and Pre-Law Scholarship recipient), Elizabeth Blair, who turned in a near perfect score. Brittlynn Hall (Pre-Law Scholarship recipient and reigning Miss UAB) earned a "Best Witness" individual award.

The team continues its competition November 17-19, 2006 at the Rhodes College Invitational and then regionally at Bellarmine University in February 2007.

UAB Mock Trial Team Earns Honors at AMTA Tournament
UAB was represented with distinction at the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Invitational Competition held November 11-12, 2005 on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. The event included 64 teams from over 25 colleges and universities, with UABs Mock Trial Team fielding two squads, the Green and the Gold.
Each squad compiled a record of 5 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie, resulting in a combined score of 11; they were edged out of overall tournament victory by Furman University, whose teams compiled a combined score of 12. In addition to the totals being the highest team scoring UAB has ever achieved at MTSU in the ten-year history of the program, we are most excited about the award of Best Attorney trophies to our two team captains and Pre-Law Scholarship recipients who turned in near perfect scores: Elizabeth Blair (Green Squad) and Jennifer Liwo (Gold Squad). Indeed, UAB was one of only five participating colleges and universities to earn two Best Attorney awards during the two-day competition.

The nationally recognized Mock Trial Team will compete regionally at Bellarmine University in Louisville in late February 2006.

2005 Mock Trial Season Celebrated With Chili-Cook-Off
Precedent was again challenged when the UAB Pre-Law Advisory Board organized and sponsored the first ever UAB Trial By Fire Chili Cook-Off in downtown Birmingham on April 17, 2005. Money was raised to facilitate team activities and offset student travel costs for upcoming competitive venues. Law firms Johnston Barton and Sadler Sullivan took first and second prizes for Best Chili, respectively, and the UAB Mock Trial Teams entry won third place. A great time was had by all as we endeavor to make this an annual event going forward!
In all, a great season for a rebuilding year: Fourth Place in our Region (out of a field of 24) and Tenth Place in our Division (out of a field of 54) with a season total of five individual awards: Allison Monk, Kim Black, Elizabeth Blair (two awards) and Chuck Godwin!
