Obstetric anesthesia services include labor analgesia as well as anesthesia for Cesarean section, postpartum tubal ligation, cervical cerclage placement, D&C, and other operative delivery options for the pregnant patient. An obstetric anesthesia consultant service for high risk obstetric patients is available to patients and their families in the prenatal period when referred by the patient’s obstetrician.

All of the clinical faculty members at the level of assistant professor and above are certified as diplomates of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Clinical core faculty in obstetric anesthesia have completed additional training or fellowships in obstetric anesthesiology.

The goal of the Obstetric Anesthesia Section is to provide safe and excellent care to our patients with a family-centered approach. Obstetric anesthesiology involves interaction with the patient, patient’s family, obstetric nurse, obstetricians and neonatologists with the goal of a healthy mother and healthy baby. Teamwork is critical to providing this goal in a high-risk and very dynamic environment.
