Providing the emergency resources to meet our community's needs

The UAB Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to serve our community with high-quality, compassionate emergency care around the clock. While our three emergency department locations are our primary focus, our board-certified physicians also provide a variety of care throughout the community.

Emergency Departments

Our physicians staff three emergency department locations 24/7/365. The University Emergency Department is our flagship location at University Hospital. The Highlands Emergency Department is a Level I Geriatric Emergency Department-- the first of its kind in the state and in the southeast. The Gardendale Freestanding Emergency Department opened in 2019 and is connected to UAB primary and specialty care offices.

Comprehensive Snakebite Program

Co-directed by our wound care and toxicology physicians, the UAB Comprehensive Snakebite Clinic focuses on all stages of care for snakebite victims. Toxicologists assess patients for antivenom needs while they are in the hospital. Wound care specialists follow up with the patient upon discharge at the Wound Care Clinic to address swelling and range of motion in the affected limb. The UAB Comprehensive Snakebite Clinic is committed to advancing care and research in the field.

Event Medicine

Our department is honored to provide care to our community outside of the hospital's four walls. Our physicians have provided on-site medical supervision during events such as The 2022 World Games and at locations like Talladega SuperSpeedway.
