Biography:

Dr. Read earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from Auburn University in 1988. Following two years of pharmacy practice, he entered medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, graduating magna cum laude in 1994. Dr. Read served an internship at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, and completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then spent two years at the Doheny Eye Institute/University of Southern California, completing dual fellowships in Uveitis/Ocular Inflammatory Diseases and Ophthalmic Pathology.

Dr. Read joined the full-time faculty of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology in August 2000. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has served on multiple committees including as chair of the Basic and Clinical Science Course Section 9 on Intraocular Inflammation and Uveitis. He currently serves as the Executive Secretary for the American Uveitis Society and is on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Academy of Ophthalmology. He is actively involved in clinical and applied basic science research in the field of ocular immunology and health disparities research.

Research Program:

Dr. Read's clinical research program focuses on health disparities in uveitis with an emphasis on mechanisms behind increased uveitis severity among African Americans. Dr. Read is also involved in collaborative projects on age related macular degeneration with Dr. Christine Curcio of the Department of Ophthalmology.
