Faculty and Staff
Nearly 1,200 full-time faculty and 1,200 interns, residents and fellows work in the School of Medicine. An important part of the School's strategic plan, AMC 21, calls for recruiting more faculty, especially mid-career, NIH-funded physicians and scientists. Many departments have expanded significantly since 2011.
Faculty are attracted to UAB for our world-class facilities, entrepreneurial spirit and an environment that encourages and fosters collaboration, as evidenced by University Wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers, and the opportunity to care for patients with a vast array of medical disorders.
UAB is the largest single employer in Alabama, and Birmingham is quickly becoming known for its progressive urban development and an affordable, high quality of life.
UAB faculty members are involved in the full range of scholarly activity. World class basic science researchers continue to discover the fundamental processes responsible for disease and identify possibilities for modifying these processes. Clinical researchers are involved in innovative clinical and translational research. Biomedical researchers and clinical faculty are actively engaged in preparing for the future of medical scholarship by educating the next generation. These educational processes are continuously improved through the application of novel educational strategies and instructional innovations.
