Alumni Spotlight: Jill Wells, M.D.
Jill Wells, M.D., Assistant Professor, Sections of Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology at Emory University, graduated from the UAB Department of Ophthalmology Residency Training Program in in 2009. She served as the Chief Resident during her final year of residency training and received the Outstanding Resident Teacher Award.

Massimo A. Fazio, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering has received the 2017 Wolfram Innovator Awards for the field of Mechanical Engineering, Image Processing, and Biotechnology.

Vision conference brings together research groups from across the Southeast
The Vanderbilt Eye Institute (VEI) recently hosted the Southeastern Vision Conference to celebrate and share excellence in vision science. The two-day seminar held at the Vanderbilt University Marriott brought together three vision research groups from Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Emory University to foster collaborations among the groups.

Gamlin appointed chair of SPC Study Section at NIH
Paul Gamlin, Ph.D., of the Department of Ophthalmology, has been appointed chair of the Mechanisms of Sensory, Perceptual and Cognitive Processes Study Section at the Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health.

New grant will fund research of biomechanical markers in glaucoma
Massimo A. Fazio, Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology, and Christopher A. Girkin M.D., have received a four-year, $2.55 million R01 grant from the National Eye Institute to explore how visual field loss developed with glaucoma is associated with individual-specific biomechanics of the eye.

UAB Ophthalmology celebrates a successful 2017 Annual Clinical and Research Symposium
The UAB Department of Ophthalmology held an extremely successful 2017 Annual Clinical and Research Symposium at the Westin in Birmingham during May 19-20, with nearly 100 attendees. This was the 18th year of the symposium and included resident, faculty, and featured lectures on dry eye and ocular surface disorders, as well as uveitis and retina.

Circadian fluctuations in glaucoma
Brian Samuels, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology, has received a five-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Eye Institute to explore the links between circadian fluctuations and glaucoma. This is Samuels’ first R01 grant.

Findings suggest underdiagnoses of age-related macular degeneration
Approximately 25 percent of eyes deemed to be normal based on dilated eye examination by a primary eye care ophthalmologist or optometrist had macular characteristics that indicated age-related macular degeneration, according to a study published by JAMA Ophthalmology.

The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2024 Annual Meeting will be held May 5 - 9 in Seattle, Washington. The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has 36 poster presentations and talks on the schedule for ARVO 2024 among 21 presentations from others across UAB. The first annual Callahan Eye Hospital vs. Callahan Eye Hospital Clinics softball game was a huge success!
On Saturday, April 22, 2017, Callahan Eye Hospital held its First Annual Family Fun Day at Memorial Park Recreation Center in downtown Birmingham with plenty of food, music, and a softball game.

Medical professionals, state agencies and community partners look to develop new guidelines for concussed students
Concussions are an invisible injury that can cause physical, cognitive, emotional and sleep symptoms that last for varying lengths of time depending on the nature of the injury. Changes in behavior, mood, learning and thinking that may be a result of a head injury can be misunderstood — making transitions into the classroom postconcussion difficult for students and teachers.

UAB Callahan Eye Hospital celebrates grand opening of new operating rooms
The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Callahan Eye Hospital and the Department of Ophthalmology have expanded their operating room capacity from nine to 16 operating rooms, making it one of the largest eye facilities in the United States.
