What began as a small medical school has transformed into an institution that spans 75 city blocks and boasts a comprehensive medical center rated among the nations best for its outstanding clinical, educational, and biomedical research programs. It takes the convergence of patient care, research, and education to ensure the finest care and to build true centers of excellence.
Since 1968, UAB and Children's of Alabama (COA) have had an affiliation agreement that established COA as the primary site for all pediatric educational programs and patient care activities within the UAB Medical Center. This alliance has allowed the department and COA to pursue a joint mission – to excel in patient care, research, and education through a lifetime commitment to improving the health of all children.
The faculty of the Department of Pediatrics provides a diverse and extensive spectrum of medical expertise and health care services, from primary care to subspecialty services. Over the past five years the department has experienced significant growth in the number of full-time medical pediatric faculty. Currently there are over 170 full-time faculty in general pediatrics and subspecialty divisions.
