New show opening Aug. 24 features New Orleans-based artists The Front

vag_thefront_podesta_sThe UAB Visual Arts Gallery will present a group exhibition from New Orleans-based artist collective The Front Aug. 24-Sept. 21, 2012.

The Front is an artist-run collective and not-for-profit gallery that includes 14 acclaimed artists from multiple disciplines. Works from all 14 Front members will be on display at the Visual Arts Gallery. A free opening reception is planned from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 in the gallery, 900 13th St. South. vag_thefront_rauThe Front’s mission is to foster the development of contemporary art in New Orleans through exhibitions, lectures, screenings, performances and other arts programming, all of which are free and open to the public. Founded by artists in 2008 amid the post-Katrina resurgence of New Orleans and committed to a spirit of grassroots DIY determinism, The Front cultivates new and experimental work from emerging artists and nationally and internationally known artists.

The Front members include Kyle Bravo, Rachel Avena Brown, Lee Deigaard, Andrea Ferguson, Dave Greber, Rachel Jones, Morgana King, Stephanie Patton, Brooke Pickett, Alex Podesta, Claire Rau, Megan Roniger, Jonathan Traviesa and Ryan Watkins-Hughes.

The gallery, part of the UAB Department of Art And Art History, is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. New hours are 12-4 p.m. Saturday. The gallery is closed Sunday and holidays.
