This Brazilian group’s name means “choro from here to there” and represents a mixture of all the musicians’ backgrounds. Choro de Lá pra Cá is flutist Julie Koidin of the United States and Brazilian musicians Diogo Guanabara, mandolin, cavaquinho and guitar, and Caio Padilha, guitar, rabeca and vocals. Brazilian singer Camila Masiso will join the trio in their performance. The group will announce their program from the stage.

Choro is characterized by virtuosity, improvisation and subtle modulations, with syncopation and counterpoint. It grew as a result of influences of musical styles and rhythms coming to Brazil from Europe and Africa.

Choro de Lá pra Cá started when Koidin visited Natal, Brazil, in 2014 in order to research contemporary choro, and the musical chemistry was immediate. Each musician comes from a completely different musical background — Koidin with her classical training, Guanabara growing up with choro and having a strong interest in jazz, and Padilha, who has an affinity for folkloric music and a background in theater. What the musicians truly enjoy is adding their own unique perspectives to their arrangements and their own compositions. The group’s ArtPlay performance is part of its second U.S. tour.
