New works by Southern composers in free concert at UAB on May 20

southern composersFrom left: UAB composer and associate professor of music William Price, DMA, and Vanderbilt University senior lecturer in saxophone Brian Utley.A free concert of new compositions presented by the Mid-South Chapter of the National Association of Composers, USA, is set for 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The concert, featuring new works by its members, will take place in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. It is hosted by the College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Music.

The program will include “With Solitude and Song” for voice and guitar by University of Montevallo department chair Alan Goldspiel; “Infamy” for solo tuba and fixed media by Mississippi University for Women assistant professor of music Joe L. Alexander; a piece for solo trombone titled “Soliloquy II” by Mississippi composer Ken Davies; “Three Pieces for Piano Duet” by Tennessee State University professor of music Olga Harris; and three new works for saxophone performed by Vanderbilt University senior lecturer in saxophone Brian Utley, including “Progression” by MUW assistant professor of music Valentin Bogdan, “Eight Treasures of Good Fortune” by Atlanta-based composer David R. Peoples, and “Sans Titre VII(B)” by UAB composer and associate professor of music William Price, DMA.

Utley has been a featured soloist with the Vanderbilt Wind Symphony and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is a regular classical saxophonist with the Nashville Symphony. As a chamber musician, Utley has performed with Intersection, a Nashville-based contemporary music ensemble, with the Blair Woodwind Quintet and with the Stone Fort Wind Quintet, and is a co-founder of the award-winning Red Stick Saxophone Quartet. He is a regular recitalist at regional and national conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance, and has performed at multiple NACUSA conferences, World Saxophone Congresses, U.S. Navy Band International Saxophone Symposia and new music festivals.
