Free “Sound the Trumpets” concert Nov. 12 at UAB

sound of trumpetsVince DiMartino, left, and John FosterPerformers will “Sound the Trumpets” for a light-hearted romp through the history of the trumpet at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Sunday, Nov. 12.

Presented by the College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Music, the concert is set for 2:30 p.m. in Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. It is free and open to the public.

From found objects to the most fragile and intricately constructed instruments, the program will feature a variety of instruments all belonging to the trumpet family and works that prominently feature the trumpet.

Master performers Vince DiMartino of the United States and John Foster of Australia will take the audience on a fast and sometimes funny journey through the musical history of one of the most vibrant and recognizable instruments in Western music. Instruments to be performed include conch shells, a shofar, digeridoo, Baroque trumpet, keyed trumpet, bugle, English slide trumpet, cornopean and early cornets. DiMartino and Foster will perform in various styles including classical, Civil War-era, New Orleans jazz, standard jazz and pop. The show is free and open to the public.
