Starting in fall 2013 semester, UAB students will be able to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree from the School of Public Health (SOPH). The new program will have three concentrations: environmental health sciences, global health studies and public health preparedness.
“This new degree will give undergraduate students the opportunity to look at the overall big picture of public health effects within communities and what is interfering with healthier, happier beings on local, national and international levels,” explained Nicole Gravitt, SOPH undergraduate program manager.
The bachelor’s degree program will include core topics studied by Master in Public Health students – social and behavioral sciences, health policy and management, biostatistics, environmental health and epidemiology – and can give a student a foundation to enter a health professional graduate program, professional school or the workforce.
“The foundation given in the public health courses will provide the knowledge and skills needed to truly make a difference, even if it’s with a small population, and will allow students to make a bigger impact as they transition into the next phase of their life,” Gravitt said.
