Internationally renowned African-American artist Willie Cole will lecture and produce a limited edition print during a residence at UAB, Oct. 31 to Nov. 6, 2011.
Cole, based in New Jersey, is visiting Birmingham to jury the 36th annual UAB Student Exhibition. He will give a free lecture at 6 p.m. Nov. 3 in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The lecture is free and open to the public. Call 205-934-0815 for information.
Cole’s residency is sponsored by the UAB Department of Art and Art History, the UAB Visual Arts Gallery and beta pictoris gallery/Maus Contemporary.
Cole will work with UAB Associate Professor Derek Cracco, M.F.A., and students from the UAB printmaking program to complete a new, limited-edition work. It will be sold to benefit the gallery and the printmaking programs, respectively. Cole and Cracco will focus on producing a complex, new, unique work that embodies the innovation and skill of the artist and the UAB Department of Art and Art History.
The limited edition print will be launched in conjunction with Cole’s exhibition at beta pictoris gallery, which opens Dec. 9. Works by Cole and Bayeté Ross Smith will be exhibited in the gallery’s raumZWEI room. Information regarding the print will be made available at that time.
