Mark Edward LaGory, chair of the Department of Sociology, will retire Dec. 31, 2010. LaGory joined the Sociology faculty in 1980 and has chaired it since spring 2006. He was the first elected chair of the university-wide UAB Faculty Senate and chaired the governance committee that established its constitution and by-laws. LaGory is a member of the Episcopal clergy and will be a full-time staff member at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Birmingham. His primary duties as a member of the clergy staff will revolve around outreach and education.

To recognize his many years of service as a professor and chair and his numerous contributions to the city of Birmingham, the UAB College of Arts and Sciences will create and endow a fund to support undergraduate students in the Department of Sociology and Social Work.
