Maples, Ph.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Environmental Health Sciences and deputy director for the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety, has earned the John Palassis Memorial Award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

This award, formerly known as the Outstanding Member Award, was presented to Maples by the AIHA Communication and Training Methods Committee for her extraordinary contribution to its mission. Maples is an Alabama AIHA section director, and chapter members say her tireless efforts help the profession progress every day and they are extremely lucky to have her as a leader.

Since 2012, this award has honored the memory of John Palassis, a former member who retired from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in 2010 after 33 years of service that produced significant impact in the field of industrial hygiene.
