Paul Gamlin, Ph.D., of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology, has been appointed chair of the Mechanisms of Sensory, Perceptual and Cognitive Processes Study Section at the Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health.

Effective July 1, Gamlin, who has served on this study section for the previous three years, will chair this group of distinguished scientists and serve through June 2019. Members are selected on the basis of achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.

The Mechanisms of Sensory, Perceptual and Cognitive Processes Study Section reviews applications seeking to study the neurobiological mechanism underlying vision, sensory perception, attention and other cognitive functions in both humans and other animals.

“I am very enthusiastic about serving as chair of the SPC Study Section,” Gamlin said. “It is a pleasure to work with such a talented and distinguished group of colleagues.”

In his research at UAB, Gamlin has spent the majority of his career investigating how the brain controls eye movements. One of his more recent research endeavors utilizes gene therapy as a tool to cure blinding diseases.
