Advances in maternal and child health focus of UAB lecture

McMillan_lectureThe 2013 Ann Dial McMillan Endowed Lectureship in Family and Child Health will feature Mario Drummonds, M.S., LCSW, M.B.A., executive director and CEO of the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership, Inc. (NMPP), a Harlem, N.Y., based maternal and child health agency working to improve the health status of pregnant and parenting women in northern Manhattan.

Drummonds will present “Reinventing Maternal and Child Health: Coordinating the Boundaries between Social Determinants and Clinical Care,” on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, from 12 to 1:30 p.m., in the UAB Alumni House Auditorium, 1301 10th Ave South. This event is free and open to public.

Drummond’s professional experience is in the areas of program administration and planning. He has worked with child welfare theory, practice and policy development, maternal and child health, social marketing, information technology and public policy development. Drummonds received an award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 1996 for his work in reducing infant mortality in Central Harlem. The infant mortality rate in this area was 7.4 deaths per one thousand live births in 2005down from 27.7 deaths per one thousand in 1990. 

The Ann Dial McMillan Endowed Lectureship in Family and Child Health is a unique interdisciplinary lectureship designed to tap into and promote public health breakthroughs relevant to family and children’s health. Lectures address challenges and innovations in maternal and child health with a special focus on issues that affect everyday life, such as nutrition, diabetes, cancer, obesity, substance abuse and other salient topics. The goal of the lecture is to promote the health of children, their families and the community as a whole by educating the academic community about new discoveries in family and children’s health practices.
