UAB launches eye-disease support groups

UAB offers support group for patients with eye disease.

UAB Connections is a new support group for people with eye disease and their family and friends. The group, sponsored by the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama, will be a combination of educational, social and recreational activities.

UAB Connections groups meet on a regular basis twice a month at the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital and hold social/recreational events once a month. The groups are free and open to those with various eye diseases, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and stroke.

Program director Laura Dreer, Ph.D., assistant professor of ophthalmology, says the groups are designed to improve everyday function, build self-esteem and help participants feel more engaged in society. For more information on UAB Connections, contact 205-325-8613.
