Nutrition sciences instructor awarded prestigious grant

Daniel L. Smith Jr., Ph.D., instructor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences in the UABSchool of Health Professions, has been selected as one of only two recipients of the 2011 Early-Career Research Grants from the Obesity Society.

Smith’s application, titled “Reduced Ambient Temperature as a Confounding Agent in Obesity Drug Discovery,” was one of 12 selected out of 90 applications to submit a full proposal for the awards being offered. The study proposes to test the effect of ambient housing temperature on the efficacy of weight loss drugs, compared to placebo.

Smith will be recognized for receiving this grant at the 29th annual Scientific Meeting of the Obesity Society on October 1 in Orlando during the address from the Obesity Society’s president.
