UAB to host cardiovascular tissue engineering workshop and symposium

The March 28 event aims to identify novel potential therapies and discuss new approaches to repair damaged hearts and vasculature.

blood vesselsUAB will host the 2016 NIH Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering (or CVTE) Workshop and Symposium, part of the NIH National Blood, Health and Lung Institute’s Progenitor Cell Biology Consortium on Monday, March 28, at the Alumni House.

The goal of the 2016 CVTE Symposium is to identify novel potential CVTE therapy products and to discuss new approaches to repair a damaged heart and vasculature. Significant advances in our understanding of how to coax stem cells toward differentiating into a cardiovascular cell as well as scaffold technologies have made it possible to now consider when and whether these CVTE products are ready for clinical trials. A major goal of this annual workshop is to organize a consensus conference on cardiac patch tissue engineering aimed for biologists, engineers and clinician-scientists to converge and conduct translational research related to cardiac repair or regeneration.

The symposium will feature many UAB researchers, including Jianyi Zhang, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and J. Iwan D. Alexander, Ph.D., dean of the School of Engineering.

The symposium will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be open to a larger group of faculty and trainees and will feature the invited speakers from the consortium and national leaders in CVTE. Both events will help form networks of expertise, guide discussion and lead to high-quality collaboration in the field of cardiovascular tissue engineering.
