UAB educators honored for work in the field of blindness

Three UAB educators have been recognized for their work in education programs for the blind.

The Council for Exceptional Children’s Division on Visual Impairments has announced the winners of its 2012 international awards and three honorees hail from UAB:

  • Distinguished Service Award – Carol Allison, instructor in the Visual Impairments Program in the UAB School of Education, coordinator of the Alabama Deafblind Project and UAB alumna.
  • Teacher of the Year Award – Cristal White Smith, a UAB alumna and itinerant vision teacher as well as supervisor of student teachers.
  • Virginia M. Sowell Student of the Year Award – Trenisha Reynolds, a School of Education graduate student in the Visual Impairments Program.

The CEC is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of individuals with disabilities. Winners will be honored at the 2012 convention and expo April 12 in Denver.
