New directors announced for UAB Cyber center

sloane bangaloreFrom left: John Sloan and Puri BangaloreJohn Sloan, Ph.D., has been named the new director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Center for Information Assurance and Joint Forensics Research, CIA|JFR. Puri Bangalore, Ph.D., will assume Sloan’s former position of assistant director of CIA|JFR.

Sloan, chair of UAB’s Justice Sciences department and professor of criminal justice, was a co-founder of the center and has maintained a leadership position since its inception in 2011. Bangalore is an associate professor and director of the Collaborative Computing Laboratory in the Computer and Information Sciences department. Sloan and Bangalore will work to continue the center’s mission of furthering education and research in information assurance and forensic science.

The center brings together faculty and staff members from schools and departments across campus to help create, prototype, test, implement and refine tools to strengthen all defenses against any potential attacks on information. The center collaborates with law-enforcement agencies and industry partners, putting the work done by center affiliates into the hands of organizations that can help translate research and development into real-world results.
