Actor Hill Harper to lecture at UAB

Voted one of People magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive,” Hill Harper has won six NAACP Image Awards.

Award-winning actor, author and philanthropist Hill Harper will deliver a free public lecture at the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 7 p.m. Feb. 27, 2012, in UAB Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. The event, which is part of the UAB Black History Month celebration, is free and open to the public.

After his talk, “Letters to a Young Brother/Sister,” Hill will sign copies of his books.

Harper stars as “Dr. Sheldon Hawkes” on the hit television drama CSI: NY. He is also the author of four New York Times bestsellers: Letters to a Young Brother, Letters to a Young Sister, The Conversation and The Wealth Cure. His book Letters to a Young Brother was named “Best Book for Young Adults” by the American Library Association in 2007.

Harper has appeared in a number of prime-time television shows and feature films including For Colored Girls, The Sopranos, ER, The Game, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Lackawanna Blues, He Got Game, The Skulls, In Too Deep, The Nephew and The Visit. He has received six NAACP Image Awards for his literary and theatrical work. And, People magazine named him one of its “Sexiest Men Alive.”

Harper is the founder of the Manifest Your Destiny Foundation; its mission is to empower, encourage and inspire under-served youth through mentorship, scholarship and grant programs. He has a bachelor degree in theatre from Brown University and a degree from Harvard Law School.

The event is sponsored by UAB Lecture Series and Black Student Awareness committees and Office of the Vice Provost for Student and Faculty Success.
