Sixteen teams compete in annual Gurney Derby

The UAB School of Dentistry won the Homecoming Week race for the second year in a row.

The School of Dentistry’s team triumphed for the second year in a row in UAB’s annual Gurney Derby on Nov. 2, 2011. A Homecoming Week tradition, the Gurney Derby is one of many events sponsored and presented by the UAB National Alumni Society.

Sixteen teams competed in this year’s derby. “Mixed Dentition” won the race down 13th Street South, gurney in tow. Second place went to the School of Health Professions’ team, “Too Fast, Too Femerous: The Tibial Drifts.” The dead last award and the award for most creative gurney passenger went to the School of Medicine’s team, “The Burn Unit.” The College of Arts and Sciences’ team, “Dead Last,” took the best dressed gurney award.

Homecoming Week events continue with Blaze the Night, a bonfire and pep rally at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 in Mini Park, the campus parade at noon on Friday, Nov. 4 along University Boulevard, and the Homecoming football game at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.
