BIRMINGHAM, AL — The most recent edition of the reference book, Best Doctors in America 2001 includes 167 UAB physicians. The book listed a total of 454 doctors from all of Alabama.

Best Doctors is a major knowledge-based medical referral service. Consumers may access its services at www.bestdoctors.com.

Best Doctors surveys leading medical specialists worldwide and asks them which doctors they themselves would go to for treatment in their specialty. After processing more than a million evaluations, only about 30,000 doctors, or about 4 percent of all physicians in the United States are eventually listed.

“We believe if you want to find the very best doctors practicing today, you start by asking doctors themselves who they trust,” according to Greg Smith, founder of Best Doctors. “Only those doctors rated the best by other doctors make our list. They must pass review by their peers, but also our own review, which includes a check for licensing and certification requirements.”

Nominations for the listing are anonymous, and doctors’ evaluations are confidential, according to the company. The system of review, based on methodology invented in 1992, includes a method of catching and correcting bias, for or against particular physicians or groups of physicians.
