BIRMINGHAM, AL — Donna J. Slovensky, Ph.D., RHIA, an associate professor in the School of Health Related Professions at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) has been designated a Fellow of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). She is one of only two educators in the country to have ever been named a Fellow of the AHIMA.

AHIMA is a professional association that represents more than 40,000 specially educated health information management professionals who work throughout the healthcare industry. The Fellowship program provides earned recognition for AHIMA members who make significant and sustained contributions to the profession.

“The review process for fellowship is rigorous, and I am honored to receive this designation,” said Slovensky. “I think it is important for faculty to strive for challenging professional goals as role models for our students. Being recognized by my professional associates is always rewarding, and the recognition that faculty receive in their endeavors is beneficial to our programs and to the school in our recruitment efforts.”

Health information management professionals serve the healthcare industry and the public by managing, analyzing, and utilizing data vital for patient care — and making it accessible to healthcare providers when it is needed most.

Slovensky is also the director of the B.S. in Allied Health Program in the Department of Health Services Administration, UAB School of Health Related Professions. She holds secondary appointments the department of management in the School of Business, the UAB Graduate School, and the School of Medicine Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education.

She received her masters and doctoral degrees from UAB, and joined the faculty of the School of Health Related Professions in 1976.
