The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed Sergio Stagno, M.D., Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) at its Feb. 5 meeting.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed Sergio Stagno, M.D., Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) at its Feb. 5 meeting.

Stagno is the chairman of the UAB Department of Pediatrics, professor of pediatrics and microbiology, senior scientist of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, senior scientist and physician-in-chief of Children's Hospital of Alabama and the senior scholar for the Sparkman Center for International Health Education at UAB.

Stagno earned his medical degree from the University of Chile Medical School in 1967. He joined the UAB faculty in 1973 and was appointed chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in 1989. During Stagno's tenure, the department has consistently maintained its status as one of the top 20 pediatric departments in the country as published in U.S. News and World Report and continues to rank among the top 10 departments nationally in terms of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
