BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Visual Arts Gallery is showing "Men at War, Women at Leisure," a selection of works on paper from the university's collection through July 31, 2010.

The UAB Visual Arts Gallery is located at 900 13th St. South. Admission to the gallery is free. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 205-934-0815.

The show is curated by UAB master of art history degree candidate Jamie Boullt. It explores two different focus areas: men at war, and women at leisure. The exhibition concept arose from a realization that the diversity of the collection required close scrutiny and consideration to construct informative and educational exhibitions. There is no formal opening reception for this exhibition.

From Aug. 1 through Sept. 1, the gallery will close for installation of "Artefact," a show by Birmingham-based artist Jurgen Tarrasch.

"Artefact" will open Thursday, Sept. 2 with a reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the gallery. The show will be on exhibition through Oct. 1, 2010. This exhibition explores ideas of perception and representation through a site-specific installation constructed by the artist. Tarrasch is interested in abstraction as a medium and uses painting to explore means of expression and art's capacity to convey complexity.
