The UAB Department of Occupational Health & Safety's mission is to ensure that our customers have a safe workplace by providing them with the service and knowledge necessary to protect themselves, the UAB community, and the environment.

UAB's New Chemical Inventory System

In early April 2014, UAB Occupational Health and Safety started implementing the new Chemical Inventory System that is going to be campus and hospital wide. Projected completion of the chemical inventory is April 2016. The chemical inventory system is not only meant to help make UAB a safer environment for faculty, staff, and students, but also for first responders in cases of emergency.

The system, itself, is a web-based interface that will allow researchers, laboratory staff and other chemical users to track chemicals on-hand, will aid OH&S with regulatory agency reporting, and will provide emergency responders with accurate information on the chemical hazards present within an area should an incident occur. This is done by barcoding chemicals and inputting them into the chemical inventory system.

Radioactive Material Inventory

radioactive inventoryUAB has a very accurate and sophisticated inventory system that enables the OH&S Radiation Safety program (OH&S) to track all radioactive materials within the possession of authorized UAB personnel (physicians, professors, students, researchers, etc.).

The inventory system enables OH&S to track every stock material from the moment it arrives at UAB until its disposal. The system is important because it reduces the loss of radioactive material and enables UAB to remain in compliance with ADPH and USNRC regulations.

To ensure the system is working as designed, OH&S continually monitors inventory submissions and regularly audits users.
