The National Weather Service and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency have proclaimed the week from Sunday, Nov. 17 - Friday, Nov. 22 2013, as Winter Weather Awareness Week in Alabama. Winter Weather Awareness Week highlights the need for being prepared for the potential dangers of a severe winter weather episode.

Be "Food Safe" During the Holidays

The holidays are a great time for people to get together with family, friends, and co-workers. Not only will the holiday's be buzzing with shoppers but if you are not diligent with food safety your treats can be buzzing with various food borne organisms that can make you sick and in some cases can be fatal.

Keep in mind when you entertain to make sure that food is kept fresh by using the following strategies from the CDC.

Space Heater Safety

The weather is getting cooler, so now is the time to think about Space Heater Safety. According to UAB policy, portable space heaters are restricted to devices where the heating element is limited to not more than 212°F (100°C), and equipped with a safety "tip-over" switch which disconnects power if the device tips over.
