The Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is a dynamic academic partnership which provides a broad-based graduate and undergraduate curriculum. Most members of the Graduate Faculty have research specialties centering around the comparative biochemistry, physiology, and ecophysiology of aquatic organisms. A second important research focus of the department centers on environmental microbiology. | ![]() |
![]() | The Graduate Program in Biology offers programs of study and research leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees including the Fifth Year Masters Degree Program. The curriculum includes departmental courses, courses taught by faculty of the UAB Medical Center basic science departments, and courses at the Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory. This diversity of graduate training opportunities enables students to acquire breadth in Biology as a discipline as well as depth in their chosen area of specialization. The department has an active Undergraduate Honors Research Program and general Information for Undergraduate Students is also available on this web site. |
Included in well-equipped research laboratories are accommodations for culture of aquatic organisms, animal rooms, tissue culture facilities, and a greenhouse. Individual research laboratories are equipped with modern and specialized instrumentation including HPLC's, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, ultracentrifuges, thermocyclers, and a wide variety of other equipment utilized in physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The University owns two rural sites suitable for conducting field studies. Membership in the Marine Environmental Science Consortium provides access to a marine laboratory on Dauphin Island, located near Mobile, Alabama. | ![]() |
