AI Literacy Taskforce
The AI Literacy Taskforce helps UAB establish a shared, practical foundation for understanding and using AI responsibly. Its work supports employees in using AI thoughtfully and effectively while strengthening human judgment, protecting appropriate safeguards, and allowing schools, departments, and units to provide specialized training for their unique needs.
Purpose
What the Taskforce Will Do
The taskforce will create a common baseline while giving units room to adapt training for local roles and responsibilities.
- Define a baseline: Define baseline AI literacy knowledge and skills that are broadly relevant across UAB.
- Support local training: Provide adaptable resources that units can use or tailor for role-specific training.
- Coordinate efforts: Coordinate related AI literacy efforts across campus to reduce duplication and support consistent messaging.
- Keep people at the center: Promote practical, people-centered AI adoption that enhances human expertise, creativity, decision-making, and service.

First phase
Initial Deliverables
The initial work centers on a common framework, practical resources, local flexibility, and recommendations to leadership.
- AI Literacy Framework: A simple framework that defines baseline AI literacy expectations, with optional competency levels tailored to roles, responsibilities, data access, risk level, and mission area.
- Foundational AI Literacy Resource Set: A small set of enterprise-level resources, such as quick-start guidance, responsible use materials, data classification guidance, and baseline training content that units may adapt.
- Training Coordination Guidance: Guidance to help schools, departments, and units align role-specific training with enterprise expectations while preserving flexibility for local needs.
- Resource Alignment and Gap Identification: A review of existing AI literacy resources across UAB to identify overlap, gaps, and opportunities for coordination.
- Recommendations to the AI Leadership Team: Periodic recommendations on emerging needs, adoption trends, communication priorities, and opportunities to support responsible AI literacy across the enterprise.
