General
Align your use of AI with the following principles:
-
For UAB purposes, use only University-approved AI tools.
-
Use the technology purchasing process to obtain approval for software and hardware purchases. This process will be modified to address AI principles, value, and risk. Follow official communications for updates.
-
The university is preparing to implement a new content management system for public websites in the coming year that will provide a better way to maintain information and allow us to assess what should be publicly accessible to generative AI systems versus what should be internal to UAB only. In preparation of this migration, begin to evaluate which websites/pages should be public versus private.
-
If you plan to use generative AI systems for your personal use, you should not use your UAB account to do so. You should use your personal account in those cases. Route requests to use generative AI systems for official UAB use through standard contracting/procurement processes (see link above), which will be adapted to assure consistency with the principles above.
-
Do not upload Sensitive or Restricted/PHI data into public generative AI systems. See UAB Data Classification Rule for guidance on what sensitive and restricted data are.
-
-
Classroom
-
Include a statement in the syllabus regarding expectations about the use of AI in the course. UAB does not dictate that teachers shall require or prohibit the use of generative AI.
-
See sample syllabi statements created by the UAB Task Force on AI in the report linked under Resources.
-
Enforce academic integrity in an era of generative AI. Academic misconduct is present in an academic work wherever AI is prohibited or assistance has not been disclosed as required.
-
-
Research
-
Do not upload draft papers, unpublished research data or anything not intended to be public immediately into unauthorized or public generative AI systems.
-
Consult with research-sponsoring agencies and publishers for guidance on the use of generative AI in peer review, grant submissions and publications. NIH, in particular, has very recently prohibited use of generative AI for its peer review process and provided additional FAQs related to research integrity and funding proposals. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors has updated its recommendations and included guidance for medical journals and authors related to AI-assisted technology.
-
-
Health care
-
Do not upload HIPAA data into public generative AI systems, including HIPAA-protected patient data.
-
-
Business operations
-
Explore generative AI functions in administrative areas internal to your school/college/unit.
